Does Twitter Verification Have a Bias Against Asian Americans?

Recently, in a group comprised of Asian American entrepreneurs and community leaders, a discussion around visibility and verification was discussed. It seems that 100% of those who sought verification, in the past month since it has been available, were denied for not being “noteworthy”.

It made me curious so I decided to seek verification myself. Not using articles, Wikipedia, etc about me, I choose to highlight a different aspect such as being a voice and leader in the personal finance space. I am part of an advocacy group and a non-profit foundation focused on independent financial media.

I was only allowed to send one link.

Seven days later, I received the response.

Twitter’s canned message stated:

“This account will not be verified at this time because the evidence provided did not meet our criteria for notability. As a result, we could not reliably verify that the account associated with the request is a notable person, organization, or brand.”

I wasn’t surprised. I’ve had a history of being denied verification by Twitter.

Back in 2016 I had requested verification 5 times and denied it. At my seeming height of media mentions, I was writing for US News, Business Insider, and other…
